Roots was made up of myself, Hattie, Becky and Daisy (from erasmus). This could be an opportunity to ask daisy if she would like to work on a brief with us way over from the Netherlands. Or even we could possibly travel there to work together.
To start on this we came up with ideas and problems around city centres in particular leeds. By identifying problems we can find a design solution as a group.
Mind Map.
Some of the topics we highlighted could be expanded on such as;
- Violence
- Empty Buildings
- Bin Covers
- Environment
- Traffic & Congestion
- Segregation
- Poverty & Homelessness
To expand on some of these topics we consider what problems and solutions could arise for example;
Environment - there is not a lot of green space in the city centre of leeds, we could possibly improve this by promoting parks, or even a pop up park.
Out of all the topics, Traffic resonated with us all. As often Leeds becomes incredibly congested it can become difficult to move around freely - With this in mind we believe our brief/challenge/soloution to come from the alternative ways of getting to work/uni/shops, such as Bikes & Public transport - there are many positive results to this such as reducing emissions and a healthier lifestyle, by promoting cycles it could mean the city could become just as popular as 'Amsterdam's' bike culture this is something I would like to discuss with Daisy.
Facts & Figures on Commuting, Different ways of commuting:
- Cycling is 3 times faster than walking
- There are around 54,000 commuters coming into Leeds
- Trains, Bus, Trams, Monorail, Vespas, walking
Leeds University Stats:
From this study alone it highlights that students would be the incorrect target audience to direct this brief towards, we need to focus on workers.
Possible Target Audiences:
- Students
- Commuters/Workers
- City Livers
