RAW Studio
Today Rob Watson from RAW came in to talk to use about how he came about setting up his own design studio. The name RAW came from his name initials, he started the business with his life long friend from school, the talker and the designer, they worked well together and started out in spare bedrooms.
Rob decided this was his next step in his career he wanted to do design for fun not just for money. They were given there first opportunity to work in Islington Studio's with neighbours from the likes of The Smiths to the Ting Tings. After working there they decided they wanted to expand so they moved into the engine house they believe that the environment you surround yourself in impacts and influences your work so they tried to make their studio as fun as possible they even added a firemans pole just for fun. There motto is to do good work for good people, they'd worked with many people that they felt didn't feel right but now with more stature they had the choice who they wanted to work with.
Jims Scarf Project
This is one of the many briefs rob talked to us about this was one of my favourite briefs him and his wife had done, in aid of helping Jim an amazing artist who recently received his MA in fine art at age 83. Jim decided he wanted to create a giant scarf which would hug around his old peoples home and residence to say thank you for being there for him all those years. RAW volunteered to create a campaign and site for Jim to make the world aware of his challenge people from all over the world engaged and even sent Jim so scarfs Jim thought this was wonderful. Rob added DO good. FEEL good.
After some years Rob and his wife who also works at RAW decided that they wanted to work from home, so they played everyone off and did something for themselves, they wanted to do what made them happy.
After many years of doing work for others they wanted to do some design for themselves they decided they wanted to self publish a book! Len Legsworth is a beautiful Children's book and the beginning of many self initiated projects.
One thing that I took from Rob was his last and final slide, Have fun and make it up as you go along.
I really enjoyed Robs talk it made me feel inspired and helped me feel comfortable in my own boots. He said that success means making mistakes this was really comforting to hear after seeing such great achievements they had done. I would like to put his positive attitude into my own practice.
